Candied Oranges with Smoked Sea Salt

Candied oranges always feel luxurious and decadent to me. Whether they’re a standalone treat, dipped in dark chocolate and topped with flaked sea salt, added to your gourmet bark recipe, or used as a garnish on your favourite cocktail, you simply can’t go wrong with this recipe.

However you enjoy these, consider adding a few to your favourite baked goods tray or even packaged as a treat attached to this year’s gift.—CFG

Ingredients

  • 4-5 large oranges

  • 4 cups granulated sugar

  • 3 cups water

  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate for melting

  • Flaked smoked sea salt (for garnish)

Directions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Next, slice the oranges into 1/4-inch slices. (Remove any seeds of present.)

  2. In a Dutch oven, combine 4 cups of sugar and 3 cups of water, then bring to a low boil. Stir the mixture until the sugar has fully dissolved.

  3. Add the orange slices to the Dutch oven , laying them in an even layer. Reduce the heat to medium/medium-low and let the orange slices cook down simmer for about 2 hours, or until they become transparent.

  4. Turn off the heat and gently transfer the to the parchment lined baking sheet. Allow the oranges to dry for 24-48 hours.

  5. Once the oranges are dried (they may still be sticky), place 1 1/2 cups of dark chocolate pieces in a microwave safe bowl and melt on high in 30 second intervals, stirring each time to distribute heat and encourage melting.

  6. Prepare a fresh sheet of parchment paper on another baking sheet and set aside.

  7. Once the chocolate is fully melted, dip half the orange into the chocolate and place back on the fresh parchment paper.

  8. Sprinkle sea salt on the chocolate (if desired). Repeat this process until all the orange slices. Allow chocolate to set until firm.

  9. Serve and enjoy!

Note: These slices freeze beautifully, so don’t be afraid to make a big batch and freeze for later!
